And Then It's Spring by
Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Erin Stead. 2012. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Roaring
Brook Press. 9781596436244. Format reviewed: Hardcover.
Annotation: A small boy eagerly can’t wait for the brown
of late winter to turn into the green of spring, and plants seeds in
anticipation.
Reaction: Any child who has planted seeds has learned
this lesson: it takes a while for anything to happen, and even then, you must
wait for your seed to become the plant you want. The young boy can’t wait for
spring, and plants many different kinds of seeds outside in the garden. He
continually checks on them, waiting for rain, checking to make sure birds and
bears aren’t ruining his work. The simple watercolor and pencil drawings
effectively communicate the simpleness of the story, and the lush greens of
spring when they arrive.
Primary
early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative
skills. Follows the seasons, the planting of seeds, and children watching and
waiting for the seeds to sprout and grow.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Seasons, planting, seeds,
