Review: A Kitten Tale

A Kitten Tale by Eric Rohmann. 2008. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf. 9780307977748. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Four kittens have never seen snow. As the seasons change, three of the kittens are scared of what winter bring, but one “can’t wait” for the first snowfall.
Reaction: Author/illustrator Eric Rohmann takes the simple plot of four kittens and a fear, and makes it friendly and visually interesting. Each kitten has a different color and pattern, and each communicate their emotions and reactions in a way that a real life kitten would. After reading A Kitten Tale, my daughter asked to have it read again and again. The story and pictures balance perfectly, with as much being told through the illustrations as with the text.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. As the seasons change, all of the kittens reflect on winter and snow, beginning with spring and progressing to winter. Each discussion reflects the fear of the three and the excitement of the fourth kitten. When the fourth kitten runs into the snow at the end, the other three see they have nothing to fear.
Recommended ages: Ages 2 and up.
Format: Picture Book. Also available in Kindle EditionNook Book.
Themes: Fear of the unknown, sibling relationships, kittens/cats, seasons
