Review: How to Be a Good Dog

How to Be a Good Dog by Gail Page. 2006. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Bloomsbury USA. 9781582346830. Format examined: Hardcover.

Annotation: Bobo the dog wanted to be good- it just was so difficult! Cat decides to help Bobo be a good dog by teaching him tricks and manners.
Reaction: Bobo is a typical dog, overly excitable, wanting to do good, but his instincts for fun always get in the way- and Cat is a typical cat, who just shakes their head at the dog, and tries to improve him. For those who have both cats and dogs, Page’s story and illustrations make perfect sense, and are easy for children to follow.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. Explains what makes for a bag dog and what tricks and training make for a well behaved dog.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up.
