Review: Zero

Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. 2010. 32 pgs. Mill Valley, CA: KO Kids Books. 9780972394635. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Zero feels empty and isn’t content with what it is, and tries to change itself into different numbers, only to later realize it is complete.
Reaction: This is an incredibly clever book, dealing with self-image, self-worth, wanting to be like others, and coming to terms with uniqueness. Otoshi uses exceedingly simple, yet effective illustrations to show the struggle of Zero to be a number it isn’t.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Print Awareness. Uses numbers as pictures and matches the word for the number in the same color and font.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Numbers, Values, Individuality, Self-Image.
