Review: Snow Music

Snow Music by Lynne Rae Perkins. 2003. 40 pgs. New York, NY: HarperCollins Publishers. 9780066239569. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Snow falls and creates opportunities for the sounds of animals moving and foraging, vehicles driving, and children roaming the country side in search for their dog.
Reaction: Although the subplot of the dog getting out of the house and running away in the snow allows for children’s interaction in the winter-scape, the real magic of the story is the normal animal behavior in the snow- from a squirrel frantically looking for where it hid its food, to the deer searching the crop fields for food.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Phonological Awareness. Uses rhyming, patterns of words, and onomatopoeia to express the sounds of a snow-covered world.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Winter, snow, wild animals, weather, dogs, children.
