Review: Recess Queen

Recess Queen by Alexis O'Neill, illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith. 2002. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Scholastic, Inc.  9780439206372.

Annotation: All the kids were terrified of Mean Jean the Recess Queen until one day when a new girl, Katie Sue, showed up and did what she wanted during recess.
Reaction: Tackling the issue of bullying, as well as the root cause of bullying- that bullies aren’t happy themselves- O’Neill is able to show what happens when someone who isn’t scared of the bully decides to play with the bully as a friend, rather than be scared of them. The illustrations are bold and exaggerated, and show both the negative emotions- including fear and aggression- and the positive emotions- including joy- well.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Phonological Awareness. Uses rhyming, patterns of words, onomatopoeia.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
