Review: Little Owl's Night

Little Owl's Night by Divya Srinivasan. 2011. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Penguin Group. 9780670012954. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: As night begins, Little Owl visits his different animal friends throughout the forest, enjoying their company, until the morning comes and it goes to sleep.
Reaction: What could be a boring, formulaic story is enlivened by striking illustrations. The familiarity of the animals will keep children engaged. The bold colors, set on a black background, are stylized to look as though they were created out of construction-paper.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. As Little Owl meets each of his friends, children see, and are able, to follow what each nocturnal animal is doing and will do- for example, a beaver is gnawing on a tree. When morning comes, a rooster crows, and the animals all go to sleep.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up.
