Lola Reads to Leo by Anna McQuinn, Illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw. 2012. 28 pgs. Watertown, MA: Charlesbridge. 978-1580894043. Format reviewed: Hardcover.
Annotation: Lola loves to read and tell stories. When Lola gets a little brother, she reads him books to make him happy throughout the day and even at bedtime.
Reaction: Lola’s love of reading and books shines through the pages, and no matter what she’s doing, there’s always the right book for it. The illustrations are simple and friendly, and show reading during various activities—this is pure early literacy propaganda. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed being read this book.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Print motivation. By showing a child who enjoys and is interested in books, and who wants to share books with her baby brother, Lola is modeling print motivation to emergent and early readers.
Recommended ages: Ages 2 and up.
Format(s) available: Picture Book.
Tags/Themes: Books and reading, reading as a family, brothers and sisters.
