Review: Seven Blind Mice

Seven Blind Mice by Ed Young. 2002. 40 pgs. New York, NY: Penguin Group. 9780399222610. Caldecott Honor Book. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Seven blind mice come across a large, strange “something” that none can agree upon- until they consider all of its features at once.
Reaction: Bold colors and simple paper cutouts make the story clean and straight forward. When each blind mouse imagines the part of the elephant they felt, the color of the imagined object matches the color of the mouse telling it- for example, the green mouse examines the trunk and explains that the truck is a snake- with a large, green snake behind him. The moral of the story- knowing in part may make a fine tale, but wisdom comes from seeing the whole- is perfectly underscored by the visuals.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. As seven mice take turns describing parts of an elephant, children will anticipate what part will be next, and what the mice will confuse it with.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up.
