Review: Chloe, instead

Chloe, instead by Micah Player. 2012. 32 pages. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books. 978-0811878654. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: An older sister yearns for a younger sister just like her, but is aggravated to the breaking point by the contrary actions of little sister Chloe.
Reaction: Chloe, instead shows the frustrations of an oldest child in having to always deal with a younger sibling, and then feeling bad and wanting to make the younger child feel better after getting into a fight. The illustrations are bold and playful, and express the emotions of both the older sister's growing anger, and then the playfulness of making up with Chloe.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Print Awareness. Player uses color, font, and font size to capably link the words and the related images. There is no mistaking the frustration in the words and the pictures.
Recommended Ages: 1 and up.
Format: Picture Book; also available in Kindle edition, Nook Book
Themes: Siblings, Older/Oldest Children, Individuality, Getting Along, Playing Together
