Review: Monkey World ABC

Monkey World ABC by Matthew Porter. 2012. 26 pgs. Vancouver, BC: Simply Read Books. 9781927018071. Format reviewed: Board Book.

Annotation: Monkeys show all kinds of professionals, from A to Z.
Reaction: As the monkeys demonstrate the different professions, starting with Artist, all the way to Zookeeper, a number of more contemporary professions sneak in, like Yoga Instructor, as well as less glamorous professions, like Janitor, which make for an egalitarian alphabetical journey. The illustrations follow a distinctive style, similar to what someone might find on a contemporary screen-printed t-shirt, but maintain a sense of whimsy- for example, the guitar player monkey looks exactly like Jimi Hendrix.
Primary early literacy skills: Letter Knowledge. Using the alphabet as the guide to show different professions, each profession’s first letter is large and colorful, reinforcing the letter and sequence to the reader.
Recommended ages: 2 and up.
Tags/themes: Monkeys, professions, alphabet.
