Review: Dinosaur Train

Dinosaur Train by John Steven Gurney. 2002. 32 pgs. New York, NY: HarperCollins Publishers. 9780060292454. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Jesse loves dinosaurs and trains and draws a picture of a dinosaur train before bed. He's amazed to be invited on an actual dinosaur train!
Reaction: Dinosaur train is a fun romp about the realities of dinosaurs on a train. A train car tipped over? Don't worry a dinosaur with a skull for butting will push it back up!
Primary early literacy skills: Print Motivation. While some might call it pandering, it takes two popular subjects for boys- dinosaurs and trains- and makes it work. It doesn't use species names, which might otherwise slow it down. My son asked to be read this story over and over, proving the formula worked.
Recommended ages: Ages 2 and up.
Tags/themes: Dinosaurs, dreams, trains, imagination.
