Review: The Snowy Day

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. 1996 (reprinted from 1962 original). 28 pgs. New York, NY: Penguin Group. 9780670867332. Caldecott Award Winner. Format reviewed: Board Book.

Annotation: Peter awakes to a snow-covered neighborhood, and has fun playing and exploring in the snow.
Reaction: The board book format does not lose any of the potency and charm of the original. The reader is drawn to Peter’s red snow suit in an otherwise monochrome landscape. The simplicity and charm of the narrative captures exactly what a child would do, including keeping a snowball in his pocket for tomorrow, only to find it melted.
Primary early literacy skills: Narrative Skills. Children will see similarities in Peter’s exploration and choices he makes (such as not engaging in a snowball fight with the big boys) as they would in similar circumstances. Even Peter recounts his adventures to his mother while taking a bath.
Recommended ages: 2 and up.
