Review: Outside Over There

Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak. 1981. 40 pgs. New York, NY: HarperCollins Publishers. 9780060255237. National Book Award for Children’s Books. Caldecott Honor Book. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A young girl's little sister is kidnapped by goblins to be their bride and she must bring her back.
Reaction: The narrative is driving and makes the reader want to turn the page; this is accomplished by Sendak’s style of leaving a thought contained on one page. The illustrations are lush and deep, and convey a huge amount of detail that may not be noticed on the first, or even, second reading. The tableaus are snapshots taken in the middle of actions, not in poses, and give a somewhat unsettling (and yet intentional) feeling.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. There is a clear starting point and ending point, established early on, as are the antagonists, the golbins.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up.
Tags/Themes: Fairy tales, Sibling relationships, Kidnapping, Rescuing, Fantasy Adventure.
