Review: Which Way to Witch School?

Which Way to Witch School? by Scott Santoro. 2010. 32 pgs. New York, NY: HarperCollins Publishers. 9780060781811. Reviewed format: Hardcover.

Annotation: Young witches go away to Thornapple boarding school to learn how to be a witch.
Reaction: Although the plot isn’t very original, the illustrations are terrific, embodying both a contemporary (the girls talk on cell phones) and retro sense of style (looking like the opening credits to Bewitched). The narrative is surprisingly witty, and capably uses multi-syllabic words in a tight rhyming scheme.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Vocabulary. Uses words including cruel, cackle, delighted, discovers, commotions, tentacles, apparent, determined, tragic, frightening, and bids. Uses rhyming, following the ABCB sequence on each page.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: School, School children, Supernatural, Witches, Ghosts, Teachers
