Review: This is Not My Hat

This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. 2012. 40 pgs. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press. 9780763655990. Caldecott Award Winner. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A small fish steals another fish’s hat, and rationalizes his decision while trying to hide.
Reaction: Klassen communicates guilt, and trying to rationalize a poor choice, effortlessly, with the entire narrative told from the small fish’s point of view. The illustrations, particularly of the big fish, contain no text but are full of subtext- such as the big fish’s annoyance and determination to get his hat back, or the crab silently pointing the big fish towards the small fish’s hiding spot.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. Fish steals hat from big fish, big fish gets it back. The story itself begs the reader to ask “What happens next?”
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Stealing, Cheating, Fish, Morality.
