Review: Bunny Rabbit in the Sunlight

Bunny Rabbit in the Sunlight by Kate Endle & Caspar Babypants. 2011. 18 pgs. Seattle, WA: Sasquatch Books. 9781570617492. Format reviewed: Board book.

Annotation: Find out what all kinds of animals do in different kinds of light.
Reaction: Each page, and animal, follow the same formula: description, animal, in the (type of) light. The paper cut-out style illustrations are simple, clean, and effectively communicate the different kinds of environments each of the animals are in- whether dawn, shimmer light, lantern light, morning light, firelight, starlight, and twilight. The ending page- “Now it’s time to turn off the light,” makes sense, and will be a welcome sight for many parents.
Primary early literacy skills: Narrative skills. The narrative formula, combined with familiar animals, lends itself to a call-out style reading, enjoyable for children to describe and predict what’s next.
Recommended ages: 1 and up.
Tags/themes: Wild animals, pets, light, times of day, bedtime.
