Review: Grump Groan Growl

Grump Groan Growl by Bell Hooks, illustrated by Chris Raschka. 2008. 40 pgs. New York, NY: Disney-Hyperion. 9780786808168. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Sometimes we just get mad and that is normal- but so is letting go of our anger.
Reaction: Caldecott winning illustrator Chris Raschka's illustrations drive this book, and using bold, almost primitive strokes, easily express raw emotions children feel. The angry child is depicted with claws, fangs, and a tale. As his anger dissipates, he becomes a boy again. A great book to talk about anger with children.
Primary early literacy skills: Phonological awareness. With the opening line "GRUMP. GROAN. GROWL. BAD MOOD ON THE PROWL," we hear the cadence, alliteral, and rhyme in anger, which is continued as the child calms.
Recommended ages: 2 and up.
