Review: Happy Harry's Cafe

Happy Harry's Cafe by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Richard Holland.  2012. 32 pgs. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press. 9780763662394. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Animals come from all around to eat Harry’s delicious soup. Matt the Cat is unhappy with the soup, and Harry must figure out why.
Reaction: The illustrations focus primary on the animal characters on solid color backgrounds, allowing the text to be a dominant part of the page. The apparent conflict of Matt’s dislike of the soup is easily resolved when Matt discloses he doesn’t have a spoon to enjoy the soup. Young children will enjoy the trickery.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Phonological Awareness. Uses patterns of words, alliteration, and rhyme, including Ryan the Lion, Jo the Crow, Matt the Cat, and uses the word soup dominantly. Also uses Print Awareness, placing characters and major plot objects in different fonts and in caps.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up
Format: Picture Book.
