Review: Building Our House

Building our house by Jonathan Bean. 2013. 48 p. New York, NY: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. 9780374380236. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A family moves to the country for a more simple life and builds a house by hand, piece by piece. As the house grows, so does the love of the family.
Reaction: The first half of the story is over-detailed in the steps taken by the family to build the home. The second half of the story, after the extended family and friends help frame the house, becomes warm and well-paced, using a balance of illustrations and contained prose to focus on the love and determination of the family. The simplicity of the artwork is somewhat misleading—this is a very detailed book on what it takes to build your own house.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Vocabulary. Bean uses construction terms throughout the book, and describes processes, such as laying and pouring the foundation, in accessible language for children. Narrative skills are also emphasized as children anticipate the next steps in building the home.
Recommended ages: Ages 3 and up.
Format: Picture Book. Also available in Kindle Edition, Audio Edition, and Nook Book
Themes: Construction, Family, Rural Life, Children and Parents Working Together
