Review: One Spooky Night: A Halloween Adventure

One Spooky Night: A Halloween Adventure by Kate Stone. 2011. 36 pgs. Denver, CO: Accord Publishing. 9781449403300. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A little monster bravely travels through the forest on Halloween night to the spookiest spot of all.
Reaction: The formula, used regularly in Halloween books, has an unidentified monster traveling past different spooky sites, including encounters hooting owls, floating goats, and fields of jack-o-lanterns, only to arrive at a Halloween costume party, but the tight rhyming text, combined with contemporary illustrations, using ink on velum overlaid on cut out black-based shadowy illustrations, makes for a very enjoyable reading experience.
Primary early literacy skills: Print Motivation. The book is made to be enjoyed again and again due to the detail with the illustrations and the straight-forward narrative. The book capitalizes on the fear and fun of Halloween.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and older.
