Review: The Hello, Goodbye Window

The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster, illustrated by Chris Raschka. 2005. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Hyperion Books for Children. 978-0786809141. Caldecott Medal Winner- 2006. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A young child describes all of the things she loves about visiting her grandparents.
Reaction: The illustrations in The Hello, Goodbye Window are playful and primitive, and skillfully express how a child would capture their experiences and memories at their beloved grandparents’ house. It’s exactly the kind of book we would’ve expected Fred Rogers to share to talk about relationships, imagination, and emotions with a child.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. The narrative is written in a way a child would tell another child about all the things that they do with their grandparents at their house, modeling narrative skills in an accessible, friendly way.
Recommended ages: 1 year and older.
Format: Picture Book; also available on Audio (CD).
Tags/Themes: Family, Visiting Relatives, Grandparent-Grandchild relationships, Imaginative play, Emotions.
