Review: The Insomniacs

The Insomniacs by Karina Wolf, illustrated by the Brothers Hilts. 2012. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Penguin Group. 9780399256653. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: After a family of insomniacs learns they can’t change their sleeping habits, they embrace a nocturnal lifestyle and enjoy the uniqueness of the world at night.
Reaction: The artwork is reminiscent of a dream world, with even the title family represented in highly stylized, oddly-proportioned way, akin to what you may see in a Tim Burton movie. Although dark, the family comes alive when they accept their nocturnal nature, and the imagines reflect a sense of joy and contentment.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Vocabulary. Uses words including insomnia, sleepwalked, specialist, meditation, tiresome, trekked, roused, aardvark, bandicoot, fennec fox, developed, and remotely.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Family, Living Aboard, Insomnia, Nocturnal Life.
