Review: No, David!

No, David! by David Shannon. 1998. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Scholastic, Inc. 9780590930024. Caldecott Honor Book. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: David is always getting in trouble for being a typical rambunctious boy.
Reaction: Shannon uses very sparse language, typically “No, David!” in response to the title character either intentionally or unintentionally causing mayhem of all kids. The illustrations show David’s mischievous nature, as well as his genuine hurt when he gets a final scolding for his mother, only to be greeted with a “Yes, David- I love you.”
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. Illustrations and sparse text combine to show a trouble-making kid; children will easily be able to call out “No David!” and why his behavior isn’t appropriate in a fun way.
Recommended ages: Ages 2 and up.
