Review: Not Your Typical Dragon

Not Your Typical Dragon by Dan Bar-El, illustrated by Tim Bowers. 2013. 40 pgs. New York, NY: Viking Juvenile. 9780670014026. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: Crispin the dragon breathes anything but fire and runs away from home in embarrassment. He eventually accepts his uniqueness, which end up resolving a crisis at home.
Reaction: Children, including my own, will thoroughly enjoy the illustrations, especially the silliness of Crispin’s non-fire breathing. However, what could be a more poignant lesson in being different can feel formulaic; we also never find out why Crispin breathes anything but fire (my children wanted to know why).
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative skills. Crispin seems to breathe whatever is needed at the time, including whip cream at his birthday party, marshmallows while camping, and Band-Aids at the doctor’s office. Children will easily follow situations Crispin finds himself in and anticipate what he will breathe next.
