Review: I Loathe You

I Loathe You by David Slonim. 2012. 24 pgs.  New York, NY: Aladdin. 9781442422445. Format reviewed: Hardcover.

Annotation: A young monster asks his father to demonstrate how much he loathes him.
Reaction: In a fun twist, monsters don’t show love- they show loathing! Describing some of the most unpleasant and obnoxious things you could face, like bellyaches, sunburns, and leeches, the little monster learns that his father really does loathe him most of all! The pencil and watercolor illustrations feel like Mercer Mayer illustrated a book about Muppets!
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Vocabulary. Uses words including loathe, sheepishly, splinters, mosquito, crinkled, frostbite, disease, leeches, fade, and peepers. Also uses rhyme occasionally.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 and up.
Tags/Themes: Parent-child relationships, monsters, silly stories, love, expressing emotions.
