Room for a Little One: A Christmas Tale by Martin Waddle,
illustrated by Jason Cockcroft. 2004. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Margaret K.
McElderry Books. 9780689868412. Format reviewed: Hardcover.
Annotation: A series of animals seek a place to
rest, each welcoming the next. Finally, Mary and Joseph are offered a place to
welcome the baby Jesus.
Reaction: Many books have tackled this theme
of having room for one more in spite of no room at the inn, and while the
narrative of the book is adequate, it pales in comparison to the lush, detailed
illustrations by Cockcroft which carries the story. The use of light and
texture, coupled with the familiar Nativity story will keep children
interested- if only to look at the images, as was the case with my own children.
Definitely a great read for December.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Narrative Skills. The
Nativity Story, combined with the series of animals, Kind Ox, Old Dog, Stray
Cat, Small Mouse, and finally Tired Donkey to come inside and share their stable-
with Mary and Joseph in tow- follow a pattern that is easy to follow and
anticipate.
Recommended ages: Ages 2 and up.
Format: Picture Book
Themes: Nativity Story, Animals, Kindness to Strangers
