How I Learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz. 2008. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Farrar Straus Giroux. 9780374334994. Caldecott Honor Book- 2009. Format reviewed: Hardcover.
Annotation: A family flees as refugees to a foreign land. The son uses a large map to imagine himself in faraway places to escape hunger and poverty.
Reaction: Although elements are dark and heavy for young children, it creates a wonderful opportunity for dialogue- talking about hunger, being scared, and imagination, and love.
Primary early literacy skill enhanced: Vocabulary. The setting of the plot, the descriptive verbs, and the imagined locales introduce words that many children may not be familiar with or encounter regularly, such as dung, steppe, cheerless, and flooded.
Recommended ages: Ages 4 (Preschool) and up.
Format(s) available: Picture Book.
Tags/Themes: Immigrants, Poverty, War, Refugees, Imagination, Father-Son Relationships.
