Road
Work ahead by Anastasia Suen,
illustrated by Jannie Ho. 2011. 32 pgs. New York, NY: Viking Juvenile.
9780670012886. Format reviewed: Hardcover.
Annotation: To get to grandma’s house, a family drives through the city,
encountering roadwork and construction along the way.
Reaction: The illustrations, in vivid, high-contrast color, are far more
interesting than the narrative, which although rhyming, is frequently lost as
the reader scans through each two-page spread. Young children will be able to look
for common elements along the story, including birds, dogs, rabbits, and an
elderly couple. Because of the level of detail in the illustrations, children
will better appreciate in a one-on-one setting, rather than a group setting.
Primary early literacy skills enhanced: Phonological awareness and
vocabulary. The story has a basic plot- getting to grandma’s house- and uses a
patterned, rhyming scheme that prompts children the next word. The text
includes vehicles, and construction terms, although through dialogic reading,
even more vocabulary, depicted in the illustrations, can be discussed.
